Saturday, February 19th, 2011, 12:30 Uhr
Arsenal 1, Potsdamer Str. 2, 10785 Berlin

Screening and round table with Kathrin Becker (Head of n.b.k. Video-Forum, Berlin), Contanze Ruhm (artist, Prof. for New Media, Vienna/Berlin), Stefanie Schulte Strathaus (Co-director of Arsenal–Institute for Film and Video Art, Berlin), Mathilde ter Heijne (artist, Berlin), moderated by Anselm Franke (curator, Berlin)

The collections of the n.b.k. Video Forum and Arsenal – Institute for Film and Video Art work at the borders between art / film, collecting, and the public. Since their inception in the 1970s, both archives have been a valuable component of the Berlin art and film scene and beyond. The challenges of preservation and providing access to the history of the medium have certainly been great, but so have the challenges created by practices of archival investigation among contemporary artists and curators. What terms and discourses can be used in mediating a (film) archive? How can the potentialities of the medium of film and the archive be emphasized in the digital age while avoiding fixed assumptions? The current state of these collecting practices and their mediation in public will be discussed at this event.
